Beyond its notorious reputation as the most densely populated place on earth [also known as The City of Darkness], the ungoverned citadel was a marvel of organic architecture and human ingenuity. At its height, Kowloon Walled City was home to 55,000 people within just two hectares of its enclave. It began as a Chinese military outpost, morphing over centuries into a refugee haven post World War II. Without laws, there were no architects, planners, or engineers. Yet, what emerged was a 14-story, self-supporting community with complex alleyways so nested that they never saw daylight. Ladders bridged buildings and corridors doubled as children’s playgrounds. This maze wasn’t just homes and alleyways. There were thriving businesses - over 700 factories and businesses operated inside, from fishball makers to toy factories.
